      1. Mr William Robinson, of 27, Castle Street, Edgeley, Stockport, who died on Monday, aged 75, was well-known in the town especially by those who remembered his acheivements as captain of Stockport Rugby Club, disbanded in 1903. He was born in Gomersal, near Heckmondwike, Yorkshire, and came to Stockport in 1896. Three years later he was appointed captain of the Rugby Club. "A more popular appointment could not have been made," wrote a reporter at the time. With Fred Saville, he was generally agreed upon as being the finest rugby player Stockport ever had. He was a builder's agent for many years but in later life was in business as a tobacconist.
2.Mr William Robinson, of 27 Castle Street, Stockport, a Yorkshireman who played Rugby for Cheshire, died on Monday , at the age of 75. Mr Robinson, who came to Stockport in 1984 from Gomersal, in Yorkshire, to play three-quarter for Stockport Rugby Club, turned out for his "adopted" county on 19 occasions. Mr Robinson, who retired only two years ago, was employed as a traveller by Hudson's, the builders' merchants, for 36 years, and later by Axon's, also builders' merchants. The interment is to-day (Thursday), at 2-30p.m., at the Borough Cemetery, and the funeral service is being conducted by Mr Hunter, of the Edgeley Wesleyan Church, where Mr Robinson was a well-known figure, having played on many occasions in the President's match for the cricket club, with which the church is associated. He is survived by his widow and daughter, Lilian, Mrs J Harrison.

    William Robinson in Stockport Sports
This is an extract from Sport Around Stockport, The Early Years, a book by Simon Myers. He examines the history of various sporting clubs around Stockport, including the rugby club.

The first team captain was to be William Robinson - 'With the exception of Fred Saville probably no importation of the Stockport Rugby Club has done the first team greater service'...'One of the most dangerous wing three-quarters in a Lancashire Senior Competition.' He had been at the club for 3 years, joining from Heckmondwike (West Yorkshire) and now played for his adopted County. William was still playing for Stockport when the club folded, and died in 1949 aged 75, living in Castle Street, Edgeley.
