History Richard Hoyle

In 1575 James Wilkinson, clothier, of Ovenden, released to Richard Hoyle, of Sowerby, all interest in a close called "Farther Tomhey," in Illingworth, in the occupation of John Holwaye, and in 1580 James Wilkinson released to Richard Hoyle all interest in "Threpecroft," which the two had recently jointly purchased from Richard Kaye, of Oakenshaw. Adam Morris, clerk, is a witness to this deed.

In 1598 Richard Hoyle either sold, or mortgaged, Threapcroft, to Geoffrey Ramsden of Thickhollyns, Greetland. The Hoyles, however, continued to occupy Threapcroft for many years after this. A witness to this deed of 1598 was Costan Maude, who from 1581 to 1589 had been Chaplain of Illingworth Church. He was the son of Richard Maude, of Ovenden, whose will of 1558 may be found in Crossley's vol 11. He afterwards removed to Elland, and died there in 1600.
