Ralp Bates Discharge papers

11 Dec 1849. He was discharged, as a private, from Scots First Regt of Foot Guards after 22 years, 225 days. He was, by trade,a labourer. He did not appear to serve abroad. He was discharged for being unfit to serve (ie,in 1841 he was in the hospital).

Character Ref: character was extremely irregular. He was tried in 1837 by a District Court martial for being drunk. again by a Court Martial in march 1842, convicted; convicted again for disobedience in Sept 1842.

Medical History: 24x in hospital for venereal disease, 2-3x for a cough. At discharge, he had a cough with expectoration, difficulty breathing and weak eyes

Description: 40 years, 10 months. 5ft, 9 1/8in. Brown hair, grey eyes, Fresh Complexion. A Labourer

He could not sign his name when he entered. nor when he left.
